Sending and receiving IOTA

Sending IOTA

First you need to login to your wallet by copying/typing your seed into the ‘Seed / Password’ box.

You will now see your balance and three options: Send, Receive and History.

Click on ‘Send’ if you would like to transfer IOTA to a different address.

Fill in the required fields, being careful when entering the amount of IOTA. You can use the dropdown box to select between different units such as Ti, Gi or Mi etc.

When you are ready, click ‘Send it now’.

Tip: If you get an ‘incorrect address length’ error, you have made a mistake when copying the address - you may have missed some characters or possibly have an unwanted space before or after the address.

The transaction is now being sent. The length of time this takes depends on the speed of your computer and also luck.

This is because each new transaction in IOTA must do the proof of work required to confirm two previous transactions; this unique innovation enables fee-free transactions and removes the need for miners.

Success! Your transaction has been broadcast to the network and is being shared between nodes. Your transaction will be confirmed when it has been referenced by a co-ordinator milestone.

You can check for milestones in the #botbox channel on the official IOTA Slack.

If your transaction does not confirm (is still shown as pending), you can Rebroadcast it by clicking the ‘Show Bundle’ link by the relevant transaction.

After 9 milestones have passed Rebroadcasting will not work and you will need to Replay the transaction - this will redo the proof of work.

Receiving IOTA

First you need to login to your wallet by copying your seed into the ‘Seed / Password’ box.

You will now see your balance and three options: Send, Receive and History.

Clicking on ‘Receive’ will generate an address for you. You have the option of attaching this to the tangle, but this is not mandatory; you will still be able to receive IOTAs without any problems.

If you select ‘Attach to Tangle’ then the wallet will do the proof of work required and then broadcast this address across the network.
